Three men, including two high profile prisoners, were on Monday remanded to prison on the charge of murder by Magistrate Krishendat Persaud when they appeared before him at the New Amsterdam Magistrate court. A fourth man arrested at his home on Monday in connection with the crime, did not appear in court.
The men, Jason Mc Kenzie, 21, of Rosignol, West Bank Berbice; Rickford La Fleur, 36, called Rickford Williams or Rickford Sabola, Bragga or Rastaman of Vryheid’s Lust, Smithfield and Canje River; and Raymond La Fleur, 34, of Lot 28 Mount Sinai, West Canje, Berbice, are charged with killing Sebastian Clato, 24, of 42 Bent Street Wortmanville, Georgetown.
At the time of his death Clato was a prisoner of the New Amsterdam Prison. The men were not required to plead and were remanded until June 20.
A fourth man and the number one accused Kevin James, 26 of Edinburgh Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice was arrested at his home on Monday and did not appear in court.
According to prosecutor Inspector Satrohan Dayaram the accused, on May 1, while being prisoners of the New Amsterdam Prison, armed themselves with pieces of wood and other implements, then beat Clato and one Andy Adams who were both prisoners of the New Amsterdam Prison.
The two beaten men were both rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital where Adams was treated and sent away. Clato, who was rendered unconscious due to an injury to the head, was later transferred to the Intensive Care Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital where he subsequently died.
Clato and Adams were incarcerated for murdering Nizamudeen Khan, a security guard attached to a Rosignol sawmill on July 20, 2007.
Rickford La Fleur the number three accused is incarcerated for killing Cleveland Hetmyer, called ‘Water Dog’ who was shot to death reportedly during a confrontation with the suspect and another man some 90 miles up the Canje River on November 4, 2010.
He was arrested a few months ago at the Sheema Gog backtrack crossing at Number 78 village up the Corentyne. At the time of his arrest the man was found with over two kilograms of narcotics.
Raymond La Fleur, the number four accused, has a number of matters before the court including robbery, possession of arms and ammunition and throwing marijuana over the prison wall.
James and Mc Kenzie who were both incarcerated during the confrontation, were both subsequently released from Prison.
Mc Kenzie was arrested at his Rosignol home on Sunday while James was arrested at a construction site in his home village.
During the time when the prisoners were being escorted from the court to the police vehicle, Raymond La Fleur reportedly picked up a chair and threw it at the reporters who were gathered around, forcing them to scamper for cover.
