Pele reign supreme at GFC; one game played at MSC
City as well as Linden players and fans are more aware now of the latest addition to the football family, GT&T’s FastBall following a series of Awareness matches at the Georgetown Football Club and the Mackenzie Sports Club Grounds on Sunday evening last.
At GFC, Pele FC won the four-team competition, defeating Western Tigers 2-0 in the final. Both teams were triumphant in their semifinals encounters; Pele edging Fruta Conquerors 2-1, while Western Tigers hammered Georgetown Football Club 5-1. Conquerors took the third place with a 6-3 triumph over GFC.
Up at the MSC Ground in Linden, the lone game saw Silver Shattas clipping Eagles 3-0. These matches were not actual competition games but are designed to get players as well as fans more familiar with the rules of FastBall.
Among the spectators enjoying the action at GFC on Sunday night was GT&T’s CEO Yog Mahadeo.
Pele's King Solomon Austin controls the ball for his side as he eases his way past these two Western Tigers players, Shem Porter (backing camera) and Dwayne Ali.
The final between Pele and Western Tigers proved to be an intriguing tussle, and they seemed to have a good grip of the rules.
The games are played for 30 minutes; two equal halves of 15 minutes, a half time break of 10 minutes and a Blue Ball being introduced in the 12th minute of the game.
If a team scores with the Blue Ball it is equivalent to two goals as opposed to the single goal awarded with the white ball.
The no offside rule; five fouls violation – a team having been blown for their 5th foul will result in the opposing team being awarded a 6 second penalty kick from the top of the arc at the top of the box.
Briefed {players}on these and other rules, the games started with Western Tigers clawing their way to a comfortable 5-1 win over GFC in the first game. Wendell St. Hill, Rayan Thomas, Randolph Wagner and Dwayne Ali who scored with the Blue Ball (2 goals) were the players scoring for the Tigers. GFC got their consolation goal from Terrence ‘Old Head’ Lewis.
Game two, a keener contest saw Pele edging past Conquerors on the back of a Blue Ball strike by National Under-23 player Sheldon Holder (in the first half). Conquerors got their lone goal from Dwayne Lawrence.
In the third place contest, GFC looked much more threatening and went after the Fruta boys from the first whistle.
They {GFC} squandered at least three clear cut opportunities in the box to take the advantage in the first 5 minutes of the encounter; mistakes that they would pay for as the game matured.
The home team was all over Conquerors, but the latter gradually got into a rhythm and there was no looking back after they took the lead.
Travis Hackett netted a double with one each from Odel Williams, Kwame La Fleur along with a Blue Ball strike from Dwayne Lawrence to seal off GFC.
The final between Pele and Western turned out to be a keen contest but Pele held their focus together to come out victors 2-0 a Blue Ball goal from Mervin Joseph in the final moments of the second half.
Western’s goalkeeper, Derrick Carter was guilty of advancing way too far off his line which resulted in Joseph taking a shot to the unmanned goal from an acute angle on the left side of the Regent Street goal and much to the surprise of Joseph as well as the spectators, the ball settled into the back of the nets at the far post.
It was a good evening for the fair size crowd on hand and similar awareness games are set to take place around Guyana, the dates and venues to be known shortly.
Meanwhile, the registration process continues with forms available in the daily newspapers. On completion, the forms can be dropped off at any GT&T Business outlet or the Guyana Football Federation Association Offices around the country. Registration closes on Friday June 17.
