Dear Editor,
I am sometimes amazed and worried of the actions and behaviour of some people who hold certain high offices in Guyana, bearing in mind they are public figures and they are role models to some of our young people in society.
I wish to make particular reference to the alleged behaviour of Mr. Carvil Duncan, General Secretary of the Guyana Labour Union (a Union formed by a man of dignity and good character) and a proposed National Awardee of Guyana.
Here we see a precedent set by another high official for the disregard of the rule of law is allegedly perpetuated by another high ranking individual and moreso, one who is to shortly be bestowed with a National Award.
Mr. Duncan by refusing to accept the summons from the Court Marshall and further causing injury to the official as alleged, has shown disrespect and disregard for the rule of law and his actions seems to tell us in the public that he is above the law and I don’t feel any Guyanese should be above the Law and Mr. Carvil Duncan should be forced to face the consequences and dealt with seriously in this lawless behaviour that he has allegedly displayed.
Further I believe that in any other country such behaviour there would have been calls from civil society and opposition political parties for the disapproval and withdrawal of the proposed National Award.
I am sure if such behaviour was meted out by other persons who are not affiliated to the ruling party then they would have felt the full blunt of the law and most likely condemnation would have been coming from all across Guyana, but they have a saying ‘When you big you big” so I guess Mr. Duncan falls into that category.
I call on all the concern parties in this matter to let Mr. Duncan understand he is not above the law and in a matter of decency Mr. Duncan should apologise to the public for his uncouth behaviour or if refuse those in charge of bestowing the National Award should withdraw Mr. Carvil Duncan name from the list of awardees.
We must not allow these things which might appear to be little, pass by, when pressure is not put on these people for wrong doings, then they feel that they have the right to continue to do what they want.
It clearly shows that the “throwing of a court order over the shoulders some years ago” has just been pass on or continued by those who have a liking for not being respectful and lack dignity.
