– GPL load shedding guide to be published
The country’s power company has warned that there will be more blackouts as another engine goes out for maintenance.
Guyana Power Light (GPL) advised consumers that the 5.5MW, No. 4 Unit at the Wartsila plant at Garden-of-Eden was released from service at midnight for major maintenance.
According to GPL, the downtime is expected to be 10 days during which the major mechanical overhaul would be completed and the refurbished No. 3 alternator installed on the unit.
The alternator for the No.4 Unit is being removed for major maintenance while the alternator from the damaged No. 3 Unit, which has been refurbished, would be installed in its place.
A modern control panel would also be installed and commissioned on the No.4 Unit to replace the existing panel which has become obsolete.
It was further explained by the power company that in absence of the No. 4 Wartsila Unit, GPL would still have available capacity of 77MW. The recent peak demand has been 74MW but since the available capacity includes 23MW of suspect capacity, a load shedding guide will be published as a precaution.
The guide would be advertised on radio and television, starting today, and would also be published in the Chronicle on Wednesday.
Guyana’s power company further disclosed that the six new Caterpillar modules which have been contracted by GPL are scheduled to arrive today.
This additional 9MW capacity would be installed at Garden-of-Eden and the first Unit is expected on line by Saturday.
