Dear Editor,
I write to bring to your attention an incident, which may or may not have serious implications, but is of concern to one who is committed to cooperate with the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in order to help Guyana rid itself of every form of terror, crime and injustice; to assist your motto to provide ‘service and protection’.
Last Thursday (-2-06-11), Senior Superintendent Crawford called me and requested my presence at Eve Leary to help in an investigation related to a Mayor and City Council Press Conference held at City Hall.
Initially I agreed, however, after discussing this request with Senior Counsels and other colleagues, I was advised differently – consequently I called to decline the invitation.
During the course of Sunday (05-06-11) the senior officer came to my home I was out. He left a message that 1 should call him.
This I did. He courteously assured me that the interview was simply about the said Press Conference and that the process should not last more than 10-15 minutes.
At the time I was on the road and we arranged a rendezvous. At Eve Leary he introduced me to three persons I assumed were CID ranks.
While explaining the events of that day related to the Press Conference. one officer who was identified as Cpl Singh and who sat about three or four feet away from me I observed was taking notes.
During this time Mr. Hinckson was brought into the room. After he left the officer who was sitting opposite to me then took the note pad on which Cpl Singh was writing, and proceed to read what was purported to represent what I had said to them earlier.
As he read what he claimed to be a recapitulation of my words, mention was made of the President and Lusignan.
I interrupted him to point out that nothing I said to them that morning made any reference directly or implicitly to either the President or to Lusignan.
I was flabbergasted and protested.
1 refrained from expressing my inner thoughts on this obvious calumny and blatant disregard for the truth and accuracy, save to ask of you Commissioner to take note of this experience, and maybe offer some explanation.
Mr. Commissioner, how can the GPF secure the respect and cooperation of well meaning citizens — if you have within your ranks persons who can be so openly creative, and allow the figment of their imagination to run riot.
There must be some wider agenda in this whole exercise, but from my brief encounter it is certainly, not the pursuit of the truth, and to secure the integrity of the State.
Because of the possible wider implications of this attempt to twist what I said, I need send copies of this letter to my lawyers, the Diplomatic Corps, to the CARICOM Heads, and the Commission of Human Rights.
Hamilton Green, J.P
Mayor
