Desmond Hercules, 75, is expected to appear in a Linden court to answer a charge of domestic abuse.
He reportedly went to his First Alley, Wismar home drunk yesterday afternoon and retaliated violently when his wife, Eunice, 70, confronted him.
The man reportedly became incensed and used an umbrella with such violence that it broke after he had battered her with it.
The woman managed to go to the police with the assistance of friends and neighbours and the ranks immediately arrested the man after finding him in a drunken stupour in the house.
