To be a professional poper you need initiative and a brain. Bill poped the opening of the Marahaj Palace in Sheriff Street last Saturday. Not without some detective work. His source-let us call him or her the invite holder-told him it was in Garnett Street. Duff Info! One conversation established where it really was. Once inside-and that was easy—Bill was pointed to the Palace within the Palace—the Presidential/Cabinet/Kitchen Cabinet boudoir. Bharrat looked surprised. So too the ticket holder.
Bill is modest so he withdrew and ate with the plebs or Dr Lindley Evan Geborde Md, ChFc, CLU, CFP. Interesting company. A man of seeming culture who mauled Shakespeare’s English—it is, by the by Doc, forte as in strength and Ex-tempore not what you said!
Dr Geborde said he was the Eagle in the 1992 election but Bill don’t remember and had been offered the US Ambassadorship by Cheddi not to take part in the election. He did Bill a great favour. He introduced him to TV icon Joel Ghansham whom Bill had reviewed that very day in KN…Bullseye! Joel was cross and berated Bill about his review and his general ignorance. Handbags at dawn! Bill had his photo taken with JG who asked him to retract. Bill’s reply was two words…you work them out dear readers.
The food was Ok if not quite subtle enough for my well developed curry palate but a good addition to the eateries of GT. But, and there always is a but, no rum on the drinks menu!
This is Guyana the home of ElDorado and XM. Get a grip Mr and Mrs Maharaj Palace.
The night before Bill paid (he does if forced) for an altogether different meal. A tribute and fundraiser for the Tina Insanally Foundation at the Kings Plaza. What a warm event.
Insanallys galore. Le tout Guyana Indienne haut bourgeois were there. All the big names and more.
Some of Bill’s old pals like Laurie Lewis and Terry Holder, Clive Lloyd and Guyana’s reigning intellectual giant Rupert Roopnaraine, Uncle Tom Cobbley and all. 200 in total.
Well done Vic and Lisa—no need to get a grip!
Bill had finance lessons all night from Sam Barakat. Well you got to start somewhere. Sam reminded Bill of a column more than a decade earlier n another organ where he had labelled Sam and Beni Sankar.
The BBC-Bankrupt Businessmen’s Club. Plus ca change.plus ca meme chose!.
Over the decades. Bill is relentless in poping and paying to find the truth for you dear readers. Remember this PP when you PPP!
Pip! Pip!
