A route 44 minibus driver is currently in police custody following the death of a 67-year-old man who was struck down on the Vryheid’s Lust Public Road.
Around 22:30 hours on Friday, 67-year-old Partab Surujdin was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital. The man had already crossed the road with his bicycle which he was pushing when he was struck down by a minibus.
The man’s daughter, Nalini Surujdin, told this publication that her father was on his way to her house when the accident occurred. Ms. Surujdin said that it is customary for her father to visit her home for his meals since his wife died.
“Every day he does ride from Chateau Margot and come because I does cook for him since mommy died.”
The woman related that she learnt of the accident after the hospital telephoned her saying that her father was in an accident. Ms. Surujdin said when she arrived at the hospital that evening at around 22:30 hours she was greeted with the news of her father’s death.
She added that after they were done at the hospital she went to the police station and was told that the driver of the minibus was in police custody assisting with investigations.
“They said daddy de done cross the road and a minibus try overtaking another one and he go too close in the corner and knock daddy”.
The grieving woman related that her father was a very loving individual and was very careful when riding his bicycle.
“He would never cross the road with his bicycle. He would always come off and push that bicycle over the road…He didn’t deserve to die like that.”
This accident is believed to be the fourth reported road fatality for the week.
On Wednesday two men from the West Coast of Demerara perished in another accident, which occurred at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo.
Tameshwar Persaud called ‘Navin’ and ‘Mannish Puppy’, 27, of 17 Cornelia Ida, West Coast Demerara; and Ramraj ‘Ameer’ Azeez, 21, of ‘Bus Shed Street’, Anna Catherina succumbed after the vehicle they were in crashed head on with a taxi.
On Thursday night, 47-year-old Nutton Mortimer Nedd of Hill Foot Soesdyke/Linden Highway was pronounced dead on arrival at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre after he was struck by a car on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
