Following up on its recent involvement in golf, Guyana Bank for Trade & Industry (GBTI) added support for tennis with the sponsorship of the Annual Open Championships which is scheduled to start on June 11, at the Bank’s Hardcourts.
According to Customer Care and Business Development Officer Mrs. Roma Narayan-Singh, the Bank has recognised the efforts being made to develop tennis locally and was happy to continue their partnership with the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) in promoting the sport.
She noted the increased number of tournaments and juniors participation in ITF tournaments over the past year.
Meanwhile, play in the competition is expected to start on Saturday, June 11 in 12 categories.
For the first time a novice category will be introduced and it is aimed at persons playing tennis socially.
The format will be a best of three short tie-break sets and matches will be played with the ITF green ball.
According to a release from the GLTA, matches will also be played at the new courts to be opened at the bank’s Providence branch.
Keen competition is expected in the Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles and also in the junior categories on the excellent surface at the GBTI Courts.
Players are encouraged to sign up early in what has become one of the most anticipated tournaments for the year.
Forms can be uplifted at the GBTI Courts, Pegasus, Ram& Mc Rae offices and from coaches and deadline for applications is Tuesday June 7.
