As the nation’s best amateur pugilists prepare for international duty at the 3rd Pan American Boxing Qualifier two of the coaches assisting in their preparations are confident that they could return with prestigious medals.
Internationally trained level 2 coaches Terrence Poole and Carl Franklyn were putting the boxers through their paces at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue Friday afternoon last. Both coaches feel that once the boxers remain focused they could win medals at the qualifying stage and move on to compete at the actual games slated for Guadalajara Mexico shortly after the culmination of the qualifiers.
Mr. Poole said that executives of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) expect to carry a 7 man team to the games provided that they are able to procure the requisite funding. Those identified for training and possible selection are jnr/welterweight Burt Braithwaite, lightweights Marlon Darrell and Stephon Gouveia, Light/heavyweight Markember Pierre, jnr/flyweight Dexter Wray and Bantamweights Keeve Allicock and Benjamin Henry.
When Kaieteur Sport visited the boxers at the National Park on Friday morning they were going through their paces under the guidance of Poole and Wensel Thomas. They were subjected to sprints, calisthenics and other conditioning exercises. Later in the afternoon they were at the National Gymnasium to resume with hardcore boxing activities, this time Poole was joined by Carl Franklyn.
Mr. Poole explained that the team of coaches was employing a systematic approach to ensure that the boxers attain full condition at the right time. He said that the boxers are beginning to peak and in his estimation are about 75% there. “The idea is to groom the boxers little by little and then intensify sessions as the time draws near,” intimated Poole. He also said that the 2 finalists and the winner of the semi-final will go on to participate in the Guadalajara held games. He further intimated that several power countries have already qualified including Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador. Guyanese pugilists have always been strong at these games and I am confident that our boys will carry on the proud tradition,” declared Mr. Poole.
