Malteenoes leg-spinner Steven Sankar grabbed 5-39 as Demerara took first innings points from Essequibo on the final day of their drawn two-day under-15 Inter-County cricket match at the Guyana National Stadium yesterday.
Resuming on 82-5 in rely to Demerara’s 264-7, Essequibo were bowled out for 141 twenty minutes before Tea after the entire first session and an hour into the second was lost due to heavy overnight rain.
Overnight batsman Kemol Savory, who was mis-stumped off Sankar on 18 by Khemraj Rupee, was eventually trapped leg before to the leg-spinner for a patient 100-ball 23 with the score on 141-9 and when left-arm spinner Akashaya Persaud bowled Keyon Davis for 12 in the next over, Demerara, with a lead of 123, promptly enforced the follow-on.
But on a slow track and Sankar showing signs of tiredness from his impressive 25-over spell in the first innings, Demerara struggled to run through the Essequibo line-up in the limited time available as Kemo Paul who made 46 in the first innings again failing to register a fifty; falling for 44.
The lads from the Cinderella County finished on 133-4 off 60 overs despite a good spell of 3-13 from nine overs by left arm spinner Akashaya Persaud.
Earlier, a handful of mainly Demerara supporters watched as the talented Sankar struck twice in one over with the score on 106 to make the break through when Essequibo resumed yesterday.
He first had Travis Duke, who hit three fours in 20 to end a fighting sixth wicket stand of 28 and then bowled Paul Williams for a duck.
When Akel Wallace was bowled by Persaud for four it was 118-8 before Sankar removed the stubborn Savory to claim his maiden five-wicket haul at this level.
Davis was then sent packing leaving Kevin Warner, whose grandfather was killed two weeks ago on the Essequibo Coast, resulting in the entire Essequibo team playing with black arm bands, unbeaten on one.
Pacer Kevin Paul who removed the dangerous Rickado Peters with the first ball of the Essequibo first innings, finished with 2-42 and Persaud 2-36.
But team Essequibo, who lost first innings points to defending champions Berbice in their drawn opening round game, reached 9-0 in their second knock.
After the interval, Demerara who had to bowl 27 overs before the 16 mandatory overs in final hour of play commenced, failed to make quick inroads into the Essequibo batting.
Rickado Peters, who carried his runs tally to 123 from two matches with a disciplined 20 and Parmesh Parsaton (24) added 48 for the first wicket on the slow track in sunny conditions before Persaud trapped Parsaton leg before. Peters and Paul, another youngster with good batting potential, carried their team to 63 before Persaud struck twice in the space of three runs when he prized out Peters and had Skipper Devon George caught behind for a duck as his poor form with the bat continued.
The final hour began with Demerara needing to take seven wickets for an outright win and Essequibo trying to survive at least 16 overs for a draw.
Sankar looked a bit tried from his 25-over work in the first innings and offered few problems to the batsmen, while Demerara missed the services of an attacking off-spinner, an art that seems to be on the decline in Guyana’s cricket at all levels.
Paul batted responsibly and along with the versatile Savory ensured their team ended the tournament with six points from two draws by posting 56 for the fifth wicket before Paul departed just before the close.
Savory, also a useful spinner, finished unbeaten on 23 while Paul Williams was with him on eight.
Demerara and Berbice will clash in the Championship-deciding match at Providence on Monday and Tuesday before the Guyana squad to travel to Trinidad for next month’s Regional under-15 tournament is named.
