Jun 04, 2011 Letters
Dear Editor,
On June 3rd, one Jason Abdulla wrote a letter to Kaieteur News, in reply to my letter dated June 2nd, titled, “Is Ramotar pressing the restart button on the Jagdeo’s presidency?”
Abdulla spent time trying to justify Ramotar’s preference for the return of the SWAT team and he attacked the AFC, so in reply I present this: “The AFC plans to confront organised crime and redress the breakdown of law and order by:
1.Increasing substantially law enforcement officers’ salaries;
2. Giving the DEA permission to set up a local facility;
3. Re-engaging the British, USA and other friendly Governments for technical and financial assistance to reform the Joint Services;
4. Removing corrupt officers from the Joint Services;”…..the AFC’s plan goes on to competently outline security and crime fighting strategies which space will not permit now, but all are welcomed to review the rest of the AFC’s Action Plan at voteafc.com
Now, since all Guyanese are familiar with the SWAT team and the British offer, I will continue to respond to Mr. Abdulla by just refreshing Guyanese’ memories and have them be the judge for themselves:
According to Special Agent Cassandra Jackson of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, “Khan was ultimately able to control the cocaine industry in Guyana, in large part, because he was backed by a paramilitary squad that would murder, threaten, and intimidate others at Khan’s directive.
Khan’s enforcers committed violent acts and murders on Khan’s orders that were directly in furtherance of Khan’s drug trafficking conspiracy.”
According to Jackson, the US Government’s case was to establish that Khan was the leader of a “violent drug trafficking organisation” and that he and his co-conspirators obtained large quantities of cocaine and then imported the cocaine into the Eastern District of New York and other places for further distribution.
We all know where Khan of the “SWAT” team fame ended up. Before Khan there was Bernard Kerik.
Remember him? He had nothing to do with the SWAT team or drugs but who knows why he was even considered by Jagdeo in the first place!
I don’t think the two are sharing a jail cell right now but my point is; any reset button which I suspect Ramotar is now willing to press will bring us the same failed policies of the Jagdeo’s presidency, and perhaps, the same disastrous results.
Meanwhile the British government had announced that it had withdrawn grant aid totalling sterling 4 million (US$6.5 million) because, in the view of many, the Guyana government was not as interested as it had perceived in enacting serious reform in the Guyana police force and was more focused on putting its hands on the money without British oversight.
Now Abdulla could try to spin this perception all he wants, just like, given the same opportunity, he might have tried to conceal the two Pradovilles, the Simon and Shock International Logging Inc and Vaitarna, the US$5 Million Fip-flip to Sithe of the highly questionable US$14.5 million Amaila Falls road project.…we all know the reasons why a Jagdeo part 2 is a justified fear by many Guyanese.
Now ordinarily, I would love to continue to debate Jason Abdulla and I am having some fun doing this but I feel compelled to repeat myself and this time around, I hope those concerned will get it, so please read it again, and this time, slowly:
Roxanne De Cruiz June 2nd letter to Kaieteur News: “There are too many concerns that have to be addressed and since the time of the presentation to the GMSA does not allow much room to clarify, I am calling on the AFC, the party I am proud to support, and the other opposition parties, to demand a debate with Donald Ramotar and have him clarify all these areas of concerns, answer all these questions, have his views challenged and tested by the other two presidential candidates. We do not need to have Ramotar talking down to Guyanese, which is what the one-man PPP show has been doing these past umpteen years.
We have many questions, oceans of well founded concerns and yes, we do fear Jagdeo part 2 so we need to have our concerns addressed well in advance of elections 2011. Let’s have those debates now!”
So, Mr. Abdulla, I asked for a debate between Ramotar, Ramjattan and Granger and I don’t understand why they sent you to debate me instead. What are the two of us, presidential candidates?
Please step aside and let the Guyanese people get a chance to see Ramotar finally say yes to a presidential debate. What about it, Mr. Ramotar? How about those debates now?
Roxanne De Cruiz
