Williams place 27th in Pro 1
Guyana’s Scott Savory of the GS Mangoni Cycle Club of the US rode one of the best races of his career to pip seasoned campaigner and senior rider Godfrey Pollydore of the Flying Ace Club to win the Category 2 event of the 2011 Tour of Summerville race series held on Monday May 30 in New Jersey, New York.
Savory, who migrated to the USA in 2008, has been on the improve and this victory over Pollydore will certainly give the young rider more confidence in his fledgling career.
Geron Williams of the Continental Cycle Club, the other Guyanese rider at the event, competed in Pro 1 category and placed a creditable 27th from a field of 130 riders.
Both Savory and Williams recently represented Guyana at the Pan American Track & Field Cycling championships held in Medellin, Columbia.
The Guyanese contingent, which also included lone female rider Claire Fraser and Manager Shaun Green, had encountered challenges with Savory’s bike being left behind by the airline along with other personal belongings.
He {Savory}had to use a burrowed cycle and was uncomfortable in his first race but no so on Monday where he rode beautifully before taking out the veteran Pollydore.
The Tour of Somerville is billed as the oldest major bicycle race in the U.S. — it began in 1940 — and a legendary event among racers. It drew participants and attendees from all over New Jersey and beyond.
Chief Race Official Cindy Donnelly said 525 riders participated in Monday’s six races, with three riders taken to the hospital after crashes or other injuries. Tim Gudsell of New Zealand won the event’s signature race, the 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Memorial.
Results – Category 2, Male Scott Savory – 1st – Guyana; Godfrey Pollydore – 2nd – Guyana
Geron Williams 27th in the Male Pro 1 from a field of 130 starters
