… Doctor’s wife murder
Mark Singh, the nephew of Shewraney Doobay, and his friend, who led investigators on Tuesday to the suspected murder weapon have been remanded to prison.
Shewraney Doobay was killed in her home at Echilibar Villas on May 24, last.
Yesterday, the duo walked into a packed courtroom to appear at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
The two men, Singh, of 44 Prince William Street, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara, and Shakir Mohamed, of 127 Latchmi Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara, were charged with the capital offence, murder.
Both men are being represented by defence counsel Gordon Gilhuys.
It is alleged that on May 24 at Echilibar Villas, Campbellville they murdered the 58 year-old Doobay. As the charge was read to the men they stood staring towards the ground as they avoided making eye contact with anyone. There was also no sign of remorse on the men’s faces as they stood in the docks.
The charge was indictable and the accused were not required to plea.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford stated that Singh is the nephew of the deceased and that Mohamed is his friend. Both defendants were employed with GR taxi service.
Telford went onto state that Singh was once the caretaker of Mrs. Doobay’s property at Plaisance, East Coast Demerara and as such was required to pay the rates and taxes on a yearly basis.
According to the prosecutor this created conflict between the now dead woman and her nephew. The court was told that on the day in question both defendants visited the home of the deceased using Singh’s taxi HB 1960.
According to Prosecutor Telford, the deceased led them both into her home where they pretended to be hungry. Singh then gave the deceased the money he owed her before she brought them refreshments.
The prosecutor further told the court that before leaving, the defendants attacked the deceased. He said that they lashed her several times with a hammer, killing her.
The men’s lawyer, Gilhuys, told the court that his clients were forced to sign a caution statement. According to Gilhuys the police ranks who arrested his clients placed a black plastic bag over the men’s heads.
The prosecution asked that the defendants be remanded and a date be set for the start of the Preliminary Inquiry.
Singh and Mohamed were then remanded to prison and will make their next court appearance on June 6.
The body of 58-year-old Shewraney Doobay was found lying in a pool of blood in the kitchen of the Doobays’ two-storey Echilibar Villas, Campbellville residence last week Tuesday. She had been repeatedly struck in the head with a blunt instrument.
Strands of human hair were retrieved from her right hand.
Her husband, Head of Internal Medicine at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Dr. Ramsundar Doobay, accompanied by his nephew, arrived home around 16:30 hours. He called repeatedly for his wife to open the door but got no answer.
He eventually sought assistance from his nephew to remove a few panes from a window on the upper flat, since those in the lower flat were reinforced with metal grills.
The nephew then climbed through the window, and entered the bottom flat, where he made the gruesome discovery.
Further investigations led to the arrests. Singh was handcuffed when he, accompanied by his accomplice, led police to a trench in Stone Avenue, Campbellville, in which the ranks subsequently found a hammer.
The claw hammer, which was wrapped in a black plastic bag, was recovered on the stroke of 3:00 pm on Tuesday, last, from the trench, just a corner away from the Doobays’ residence.
