Junior chess player and student of Richard Ishmael Secondary School, Saeed Ali, played the game of his life to secure a win over senior National Champion, Taffin Khan when the TOPCO Juices Independence Anniversary Chess tournament got underway at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club, Hadfield Street Sunday afternoon last.
Ali’s feat occurred soon after another junior player, Roberto Neto of Diamond Secondary School, won against Pierre Boucher, another noteworthy senior player. Following this victory, Ali is now poised to secure a lucrative podium position. Khan overlooked checkmate on Ali’s king in an earlier move, an error that cost him dearly. Ali capitalized which gave him a distinct advantage over his senior counterpart and he took full advantage of the opportunity, forcing the more experienced Khan to concede defeat.
Despite this momentous achievement, Ali still has a lot of work to do if he is to ascend the podium as the win has pushed him to four points after five rounds, the same as Boucher and Khan. Anthony Drayton of Government Technical Institute (GTI) occupies the second place among the juniors with 3 ½ points while former national junior champion Cecil Cox, remains in the cellar on three points apiece.
The finals in both the senior and junior categories are slated for this Sunday at the same venue.
