‘Sash’ Sawh also to get national award
The late Agriculture Minister, Satyadeow Sawh, is to be conferred, posthumously, with the Cacique’s Crown of Honour, the country’s third highest national award.
Yesterday, the government’s chief spokesperson, Dr Roger Luncheon, said that Cabinet regretted its failure to recognise Sawh in the announcement of the awards, which was made in the state-owned Guyana Chronicle and the privately-owned Stabroek News on Sunday.

The Minister, along with his siblings Rajpat Rai and Phulmattie Persaud, as well as security guard Kurtis Robertson, were gunned down in April 2006.
Sawh’s immediate family moved to Canada after the incident, and his widow, Satie Sawh, now manages the Guyana Consulate in Toronto following the resignation of Danny Doobay last year.
Sawh is one of two late Ministers who will be conferred with a national award. The other is the late Dr Desrey Fox, who served as Minister within the Ministry of Education, but was recognised more for her contribution for her promulgation of her Amerindian culture.
Meanwhile, Dr Luncheon sought to defend the government’s departure from the traditional practice of announcing the awards on the eve of Independence.
He said that the announcement of the entire list of awardees would have been too lengthy. The truth is that this announcement was always done during previous awards and was factored into the programme.
