Edwards’ ton help Young Guns of St Kitts beat Big Rock of Nevis
Young Guns of St. Kitts beat Big Rock of Nevis by 112 runs in the third installment of the Independence Cup contested between the Guyanese teams on Sunday at Conaree in St. Kitts.

The match, to commemorate Guyana’s Independence anniversary, saw Young Guns amassing 237 for five from their quota of 30 overs, and Big Rock replying with 125 in 23.2 overs.
The Young Guns innings was built on an unbeaten century by Welton Edwards who slammed 15 fours in a 77-ball 106. Amar Gossai also contributed 43 and Raju Rampersaud 32. Edwards, who made 84 to lead his team to the win last year, added 77 for the second wicket with Gossai and 73 for the fourth with Rampersaud.
There was a wicket each for Rakesh Subramani, Derrick Blair, Nazir, Noel Southwell and Carlos Adolphus.
When Big Rock batted Adolphus led the way with a run-a-ball 55 which included nine fours, while Donovan Matthews struck five boundaries in a 27-ball 33. The pair added 64 for the second wicket in 36 minutes and was beginning to worry the Young Guns captain when Adolphus called Matthews for an impossible single, resulting in the wicket-keeper being run out by half of the pitch. The only other batsman to reach double figures was Hiralall Narine with 10.
For Young Guns, Hemant Parbhu claimed four wickets for 16 runs from 5.2 overs while Bernard Island had four for 21 from five.
Edwards took home the prize for the best batsman, while Parbhu was adjudged the best bowler. Both prizes, along with the winners’ cup, were sponsored by Digicel.
