Dear Editor,
Allow me to express my disgust at the GPL Garden of Eden employees’ unprofessional, disrespectful and corrupt attitude.
On Saturday, May 21, 2011, a “Bar-B-Que” was held at First Street, Friendship, East Bank Demerara.
Apart from the noise nuisance, which has become prevalent in the area, an illegal wire was connected to the GPL main line, to facilitate the power of the excessively loud, music system.
Anyone would agree that no ordinary person can climb a 20-foot lamp post and connect a live wire at 6:00pm, except for a trained linesman, who uses specific tools, equipment and gear to perform this task.
So, a call was made to the Guyana Power and Light’s emergency hotline, at Garden of Eden, EBD, to report the illegal connection. However, Mr. Balkarran as he identified himself, and who was obviously annoyed at what he was hearing and defended the event, spoke very rudely and said to call back on Monday.
He suggested that my only reason for making a report was that the music was an annoyance to me. Mr. Balkarran also admitted that he knew of the reoccurring situation but wasn’t going to do anything about it. And the only problem at hand is one of my own.
Is this the insult and disrespect you have to suffer when making a report of this nature?
One would think that this situation should have been treated with utmost urgency since the GPL East Bank Demerara office is a mere five minutes away. And surely the perpetrators wouldn’t still be there on Monday.
Isn’t illegal connection something that GPL lobbies against? And, what is the reason for establishing a 24-hours hotline, when employees don’t act with integrity and do their jobs? Or is the call center an outlet for the corrupt employees to earn extra cash on the side?
My suggestion to the directors of GPL is to “do an internal investigation under your own roof, before you deal with external affairs. You may be surprised at what turns up.”
