New Amsterdam/Canje powered into the final of the Diamond Fire & General Insurance Under-19, two-day Inter Zone cricket competition in Berbice following their massive 240 run win over Central/Upper Corentyne in semifinal play.
Spearheading the victory was Berbice Under-15 batsman Shimron Hetmyer who slammed a composed 118.
Playing at the Cumberland Ground, Canje; New Amsterdam/Canje won the toss and chose to bat with Hetmyer and Tregon Henry setting the pace for the innings as they added 60 for the first wicket before Henry fell for 16 to off spinner Parmanand Narine.
Former Berbice Under-15 all-rounder Linden Austin then joined Hetmyer and the pair put on another 115 for the 2nd wicket before Hetmyer was caught for 118 (8 fours 7 sixes) at 175 for 2 in the 39th over.
Austin went on to complete an even half century, while Guyana Under-15 batsman Romario De Jonge hit 49; National Under-19 Joemal La Fleur 29 and Kevin Ramdeen 26 – New Amsterdam/Canje compiling 301 for 7 innings close after their 65 over first innings limitation expired.
Bowling for Central/Upper Corentyne, Parmanand Narine took 2 for 51, Delon Hinds 2 for 59 and West Indies female cricketer Shemaine Campbelle 1 for 54.
In response, Central/Upper Corentyne found themselves in early trouble at 26 for 2 and with the introduction of off spinner Kevin Ramdeen, things deteriorated further as he picked up three wickets including that of Campbelle for duck as they slumped to 56 for 5, then 102 for 9 before a last wicket stand of 40 between Delon Hinds 21* and Tariq Chaitram saw them to 142 all out in their first innings.
Devin Baldeo top scored with 36 while Parmanand Narine made 20. Bowling for New Amsterdam/Canje, Kevin Ramdeen took 4 for 39.
With a first innings lead of 159, New Amsterdam/Canje decided not to enforce the follow on but opted for batting practice. However, they ran into the off spin of Parmanand Narine who removed the top four batters including Hetmyer for 2, Joemal La Fleur 4 and Linden Austin 11 to leave them stuttering at 28 for 4.
Romario De Jonge and Kevin Ramdeen steadied things with a stand of 52 before De Jonge fell for 31 at 82 for 4. Ramdeen added another 43 quickly with Vidol Crandon before he was caught for 61. After Narine picked up his 5th wicket at 126 for 7, Crandon 45*, Chedwin Cort 32 and Andel De Jonge 18 saw New Amsterdam/Canje to 221 for 9 declared.
The top bowlers for Central/Upper Corentyne were Parmanand Narine 5 for 57 and Surendra Kissoonlall 2 for 25.
Central/Upper Corentyne had the daunting task of scoring 381 runs in 300 minutes to register a come from behind win but they found the bowling too much to handle and were bowled out for 140. N. Yacoob 32, Mohan 29*, Viendra Gooniah 25 and Tariq Chaitram 24 were the main contributors.
Bowling for New Amsterdam/Canje, left arm spinner Chris Sulker took 3 for 45 and Romario De Jonge 2 for 29. Lower Corentyne had earlier beaten West Berbice on first innings in their drawn semi-final to earn their place in the final.
