Peters’ unbeaten 69 give E’bo early advantage
By Sean Devers
What transpired yesterday at the Guyana National Stadium on the opening day of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) two-day Inter-County under-15 cricket competition was a reflection of the depressing state of Guyana’s cricket.
Ricakdo Peters hit five fours in an unbeaten 69 and added 92 for the second wicket with Kemo Paul whose 47 was decorated with seven boundaries as Essequibo reached 148-5 when their first innings allotment of 65 overs expired.
By the time bad light stopped play with 11 of the 12 overs completed in the Berbice innings, Essequibo had removed three batsmen as the defending champions slipped to 37-3, needing another 111 runs from 54 overs with seven wickets in hand going into the final day today.
Overnight rain prevented a prompt 09:00hrs start and the Umpires decided to commence the game after Lunch at 11:30. However, the unavailability of book scorers saw the game eventually began at noon with players from the two teams doing the scoring duties.
In a tournament used to decide Guyana’s Inter-County champions and to pick the National side for next month’s Regional under-15 competition in Trinidad, the Lunch which was supposed to be available for 11:00hrs never arrived until after 12:00hrs and due to the player’s hunger the match had to be halted 30 minutes after it began for the players to eat.
A GCB official explained that since ‘overtime’ had to be paid to the Stadium staff on match days the match was fixed to commence at 09:00hrs and end at 16:00hrs although play yesterday was extended by an hour and 44 minutes.
When Kaieteur News tried to get an explanation from the match Referee, none was at the venue but a GCB member was quick to point out that the official playing conditions stated that the match would be controlled by the match Referee ‘who may or may not be at the venue’ during any day’s play.
In sunny conditions and playing before empty stands pacer Grisean Grant removed Parmesh Parsaton for one at 1-1 before the 15 year-old Peters and Paul took their team to 81-1 by Tea with solid batting on a slow track.
Peters, from South Essequibo, timed the ball well, while Paul, from Wakanaam, looked set for his 50 before he got the leading edge to off-spinner Ariff Chan and was taken at mid-off at 93-2.
Skipper Devon George (11) was caught and bowled by Sharaz Ramcharran 11 runs later before Kemol Savory (11) and Peters carried the score to 141 before Savory was run out.
Berbice struck again when Shaquille Rigby (2) was caught and bowled by Ramcharran at 144-5 before the overs expired, leaving Peters who plays for Zorg Sports Club on the Essequibo Coast, 39 short of his first ton at any level.
Ramcharran took 2-49 from 19 overs for Berbice who lost Shimron Hetmyer; run out for 11, Nick Ramsaroop well caught at cover for 13 off Akel Wallace and Viendra Gooniah (14) leg before to Peters to slip to 37-3.
Nicholas Cameron was yet to score as bad light stopped play when Ramsaroop was dismissed.
Play is scheduled to commence at 09:00hrs and both teams will be pressing for first innings points and it his hoped that the second official scorer, along with the Match Referee turns up today for a game which very few people seem interested in.
