Police at Mahaica have arrested a man who reportedly admitted to setting fire to a palace in the community last Saturday.
The man was held hours after the fire which damaged a portion of the building that houses the Rohan Auto Sales at Good Hope, Mahaica.
But apart from the arson, police are also investigating the man, an ex-employee of the establishment, for break and enter and larceny.
A source close to the investigations told this newspaper that the man, who was fired a month ago and had promised to “get even” with his former employer, had scaled the fence surrounding the property, secreted himself and waited for an opportunity to pounce.
According to a source, around 15:00 hours on Saturday, the ex-employee was seen by another worker throwing a flammable object through a bottom flat window that was left open.
The worker shouted at the ex-employee and even chased after him in a vehicle, but the man managed to make good his escape.
However quick and decisive action by farmers saved the famous landmark from destruction by fire.
The suspect, who has reportedly given a caution statement, is expected to be placed before the courts soon.
Police have also indicated that other persons were implicated and they too could be arraigned.
