The Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) has offered sincere congratulations to Michael Parris and Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis for being chosen to receive National Awards shortly.
The pair of former world class boxers has been bestowed with the Medal of Service (MS) Award for their sterling contributions to Guyana through the sport of boxing. Parris is Guyana’s lone Olympic medalist, having won a Bronze Medal at the Moscow Games in 1980. Lewis is the country’s first World Champion.
Lewis won the World Boxing Association (WBA) Welterweight title on February 17, 2001 in the USA knocking out James Paige in the 7th round of their contest.
GABA President Steve Ninvalle stated that they were happy the pair was chosen and it goes to show that in the long run perseverance pays off and puts an athlete in good stead during their careers and even after it would have climaxed.
He noted that their contributions to Guyana has been immense and the recognition the two men would have brought Guyana is noteworthy and they are deserving recipients of the award.
He challenged young fighters to emulate the pair in their disciplined work ethic and reap similar rewards of being able to be on top of their game and serve self and country with distinction.
Ninvalle again praised the boxers for what they have done in the past and supports any recognition they and others would receive in the future.
