Ten-man Barbados held on for a draw against Guyana’s Golden Jaguars in their return Friendly International game last evening at the Barbados National Stadium, Waterford, St. Michael.
The young Guyanese side preparing for the CFU Olympic Qualifying competition next month failed to capitalize on the advantage of having an extra player after the Bajans were reduced to 10-men when goalkeeper Omari Eastmond was given marching orders for violent conduct committed against Clive Nobrega in the 29th minute.
Despite the setback on the part of the senior Bajan side, their experience took them through as the young Guyanese failed to nail their opposition whom they defeated 1-0 and 3-2 in Guyana earlier this month.
The Guyanese started the game in timid fashion allowing the home team to dictate the flow of the game and as expected, the lads from the Land of the Flying Fish played a very physical game.
They took the lead in the 24th minute through a Jeffery Williams goal, a well taken shot from a set piece, a free kick that was squared into the box which Williams slapped past goalie Oswald Cornette; the defence not being properly organised.
The Guyanese players were below their best on the night despite being urged on by their fellow countrymen and women who outnumbered the home fans. They urged the players in vociferous manner whilst waving the Golden Arrowhead – scattered throughout the crowd – proudly.
Guyana scored in the 65th minute through Sheldon Holder, but the goal was deemed offside by the referee. As the minutes ticked away, the tension was rising as the visitors went after the equalising goal.
In the 76th minute, Vurlon Mills fired in a powerful shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Jason Boxhill into the path of his teammate and defender Barry Skeete; the ball rebounded off Skeete into the back of his own nets much to the delight of the Guyanese players and the crowd which went into a frenzy.
Guyana kept pressing as much as they could but failed to be as penetrative as they could have, a number of bad passes and long air balls, which the tall opposing players won with ease, was some of the grey areas for the Guyanese.
Kudos must go to this young side however for the heart warming performances they have put in, in the four matches they have played, defeating Barbados twice, drawing once against the same opposition and beating Bradley University 2-1.
