– Minister Anthony commits to 5k race every month
National and regional distance running stars, Cleveland Forde and Alika Morgan showed why they are regarded among the best distance runners in the Caribbean when they easily dominated an impressive field at the Independence 5k Road Race.
Forde won in 14:41.3 while Cleveland Thomas was second in 15:09.6 and Wilbert Mingo third in 15:25.2. Tyshon Bentick and Chavez Sital rounded up the top five in the male race in times of 15:38.3 and 15.54.7 seconds respectively.
Morgan finished in 17:39.8 seconds beating Jevina Straker (18:53.1) and Ashanti Scott (18:53.8) in the process. Morgan ran without opposition throughout the journey that went up and down the Main Street course to Pegasus twice before its finish in front the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
Forde had much more opposition in his race after a pack that included Thomas, Bentick, Mingo and Sital left the bunch early in the race. At the halfway mark, Forde and Thomas had left those other athletes behind for the battle of the champions.
However, Forde showed his superiority when he left Thomas in a sudden burst about 10 metres behind, which forced Forde to compete against the clock for the remainder of the race. Just that happened in a classical display of distance running tactic.
Forde dismissed any challenge and easily took the top of the podium. Udenhout Gullermo took the Masters’ title ahead of Sylvan Gardener and Maurice Julian. Alicia Fortune won the female Masters race ahead of Lorrieann Adams and Samantha Williams.
In the juniors, Ornesto Thomas and Adrian Foster finished in that order. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony committed to hosting one of such races on the third Sunday of every month to aid in the development of athletes.
