Days numbered for Diamond roadside vendors

Vendors conducting business by Great Diamond on the East Bank Public Road will have to remove, says Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn.
Encumbrance is a zero-tolerance issue and according to Minister Benn, the vendors are obstructing the free flow of traffic.
Among the grand infrastructural development at Great Diamond lies a deplorable car park which has attracted illegal vending on the state reserve.
Although vendors are aware that they are encumbering the state reserve, they do not want to move. They claim that their daily bread is dependent upon them selling and wherever the car park is located customers are readily available.
Odessa, 30, a single parent, has recently started vending near the park.
“I been home doing nothing and I have kids to take care of, so I say let me come out here. I finding it easy now, the population big,” Odessa stated.
According to Samuels, who has been vending in the area for almost four years, it is feasible to sell next to the car park. He noted that he was allotted a spot at the Grove/ Diamond Market but the market is not in operation.
Vendors on the state reserve at Great Diamond, East Bank Demerara Public Road
It was emphasised that even if the market does become operational it is not the desired location.
Samuels stated that his business was located directly near the entrance to the Diamond Housing establishment, but owing to the widening of the road, installation of pavements and the removal of the car park, he moved his operation.
However, another road project will be removing him once again. The East Bank Public Road is to be widened from Providence to Great Diamond and from Grove to Timehri.
