Search teams in the Sherima mining area are expected to brave the treacherous waters of the Sherima River in search of the body of Police Constable Branford who is feared drowned.
Branford went down while taking a bath in the river shortly after completing a game of cricket in the area yesterday.
Divisional Commander David Ramnarine confirmed last night that two teams will resume their search of the river which has risen several inches as a result of recent heavy rainfall.
Ramnarine told this newspaper that from the reports he has received so far, Branford, who is stationed at Sherima, was playing cricket with a colleague and some other persons in the area yesterday after which he went into the river to take a bath.
According to the Commander, the Constable spent some time in the water and was subsequently seen making his way out of the river when he started to go down.
This newspaper was told that as he was going down, Branford called out to one of the persons he was playing cricket with for help.
The person responded but by the time he got to the water, the Constable had disappeared.
“So far he is missing and we fear the worst. The current is very strong,” the Divisional Commander told Kaieteur News, assuring that the two search teams will go into operation today.
