Two policemen who were returning from a family outing at Berbice came under fire last night after stumbling upon a car in a ditch at Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara.
Injured in the shooting were Police Constable Samuel Mootoo, who is attached to the Brickdam Police Station and Navindra Rantideo. Sergeant Alfred Parks was the other officer in the vehicle.
The police constable was shot in the arm, while Rantideo was shot to the neck, shoulder and under the right armpit.
This newspaper was told that the officers, who were returning from Berbice, saw the vehicle in the ditch as they were passing Mahaicony.
Kaieteur News was also told that the officers who were in civilian clothing, thought that it was an accident and quickly turned the vehicle around to render assistance.
It was stated that the officers parked their vehicle so that the headlights could beam down at the car in the ditch.
“They thought it was an accident and went to render assistance,” one source said.
The source said that as the two policemen were approaching the vehicle, Rantideo, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, ran out from a yard with the gun in his hand.
“The man ran out a yard and shouted to the officers to move away from his f**king vehicle” the source said.
Seconds later the man opened fire at the officers, hitting Mootoo in the arm. The officers then returned fire, wounding Rantideo.
He was taken to the Georgetown Hospital by the police for treatment. Hospital sources last evening described his condition as “semi-critical”.
Relatives who were present at the hospital last night were hesitant to divulge any information concerning the shooting.
The police officer was taken to a private institution for treatment. Further this newspaper was told that weapon which was used by Rantideo was an unlicensed 9mm Colt.
This newspaper was unable to solicit a comment from any senior police official last night. Investigations into the shooting are continuing.
