The Golden Jaguars are aiming to close out their brief tour of Barbados on a winning note today when they face the home team in their return friendly International at the Barbados National Stadium, Waterford, St. Michael.
Barbados played two games in Guyana on May 20 and 22 losing both; 1-0 at the Mackenzie Sports Club Ground, Linden and 3-2 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
The return game this evening is expected to be a tough encounter for the young ‘Golden Jaguars’ but Head Coach Collie Hercules is optimistic that his team will take care of the home team. The Bajans drew with St. Vincent & the Grenadines Under-23 side 0-0 in the feature game on Friday evening; Guyana defeating Bradley University in the opening game, a come from behind 2-1 win.
Bradley and St. Vincent, who like Guyana, is preparing for the CFU Olympic Under-23 playoffs next month, will face off in the first game this evening with Guyana and Barbados playing the main event at 20:00hrs.
Hercules, reflecting on the game against the University side on Friday said that the first half performance by Guyana was horrible and the worst the side has played in the three matches so far.
“It was a real ordinary performance by these guys, we were very slow to the ball, we were very laxed and the attitude wasn’t the best. The Bradley players were quicker onto everything. So we had to pep and wake them up at the break to get their minds back into the game and help them to understand that it was going to be a tough game and I think they did far better in the second half.”
Hercules said he was impressed with the fight and attitude shown in the second half as well as the number of passes his charges were able to put together.
“The plan was to calm down and play our brand of football which was to take their time and maintain possession.” Looking ahead to the Barbados game today Hercules said that this young team is still learning but he has admired the fight shown by them against the Bajans in Guyana coming from two goals down in the second game to win 3-2 and here against Bradley University, erasing the one goal to win 2-1. “We know that the home team will be out to try and turn the tables and we are prepared for them. Our players are confident but we will not allow them to look past the opposition but rather treat this game as another potentially tough encounter.”
The team held a recovery training session yesterday morning ahead of this evening’s clash which is expected to be attended by dozens of Guyanese living and working on the Island.
Both goalkeepers (Akel Clarke & Oswald Cornette) were injured in the game against Bradley, Clarke suffering an injured right wrist and had to be substituted about 5 minutes into the encounter, Cornette replacing him and was injured in his back after being hit by an opposing player in his back.
Both players should be back to full fitness for today’s important game, Physio Michelle Jackman worked overtime with the players to ensure that they are back to full fitness to represent their country.
Captain Christopher Bourne, will once again lead his troopers in battle and they will all be aiming to record another win for their countrymen and women
