Yet another horrific tale of sexual molestation is being unveiled, as information of a 14-year-old girl being gang raped by a group of men on the West Coast of Demerara (WCD), has now surfaced.
Reports are that around 23:30 hrs (11:30pm) on the eve of Guyana’s Independence anniversary, a taxi driver contacted the Community Policing Group (CPG) of South Tuschen, to notify them of something which seemed “disturbing”.
He asked the members of the group to “check it out”.
The man claimed that he believed something suspicious was brewing when he transported a young girl with “a number of men” to a deserted area called “the Blacka” located at Block Eight Tuschen Phase Two Housing Scheme (which is known to be a dangerous area where a lot of criminal activities occur).
Kaieteur News understands that when the members of the CPG arrived at the area, before the Leonora Police Station was aware of the matter, they located the naked female teen lying inside of the bushes, and she was bleeding profusely.
A woman who lived in the area was asked to assist the members of the CPG (all male) with clothing over the young girl’s body and taking her to the hospital to receive medical attention.
According to a source, the teen reeked of alcohol and was “in quite a daze”. She was unable to answer properly questions from the CPG members and from medical officials.
She told the relevant authorities that she could not remember what transpired on the evening in question; the only thing that she recalled was travelling in the taxi, though she claims everything which led to that part remains blank in her mind.
Another source closely related to the investigations explained to Kaieteur News that the teen appeared to have been raped and sodomised.
“She keeps changing her statement when she is questioned as to where she lives and how relatives can be contacted. She holds on to the statement ‘“I can’t remember’”.
The taxi driver, who was held in police custody, was released on bail, after disclosing that he “picked up the men with the girl” at a house in the area.
He also identified a man who is well-known to the villagers as “John Pat” who he claimed was one of the men he dropped off at the location with the teen.
This publication understands that “John Pat”, who is the main suspect in this case, is on the run.
The Chairman of the South Tuschen CPG, Shaheed Ahmad, explained that he was not at liberty to disclose information about the matter but did urge that the relevant authorities take note of the incidents that keep occurring in South Tuschen, particularly, at “the Blacka”.
He added that a number of illegal activities take place in that isolated part, where young men are smoking weed and “handling drugs”, some of them even consuming too much of alcohol and getting into “bloody battles”.
Ahmad added that if more security measures could be put in place and both the police and CPG members could take shifts in patrolling the area then such incidents like that which occurred with this 14-year-old, could be avoided.
A number of residents in the area praised the work of the South Tuschen CPG, stating that they execute more duties and patrols in the area than the police ranks do.
They went on to say that some police officers are making it difficult for the CPG since they (the police) have the resources to do the job they are required to do but “leave a lot to the CPG”.
One disgruntled gentleman told Kaieteur News, “The CPG does do things voluntarily.
Liaison to the Minister of Amerindian Affairs, Norman Whittaker, concerning the case of the 14-year-old girl, he explained that he was not personally aware of the situation.
However; he promised to ensure that this matter was taken care of.
Whittaker said, “We have a welfare section that usually deals with this when such incidents come to light via the media or however we learn of it and we normally get on top of it. Well now that I know of this, we will get on top of it…thank you”.
Director of Social Services, Anne Greene, told Kaieteur News that though she was not familiar with the case and did not even know that it took place, she would ensure that her agency does its job since that is what it was established to do.
