Moen Gafoor turned in a sterling performance to register 4 games and a positive spread of 361 to take top honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged the annual Independence Open competition, at the Malteenoes Sports Club Pavilion Thursday afternoon last Colin Chichester finished in the second place with 4 games and a positive spread of 257 while the final podium spot was occupied by Orlando Michael, also with four games but a lesser positive spread of 198.
Two other players, Nicholas Grant and Grace Hercules also won four games but Grant eventually won a prize for coming in fourth by dint of a higher positive spread of 127 as against Hercules’ spread of negative 67.
Colin Chichester formed ‘striking,’ scored 107 points and eventually won a special prize for forming the bingo with the most points, while Nanda Affeeze was adjudged the most promising junior player.
Three players, Gafoor, Chichester and R O Michael tied at nine bingos apiece and after a tie-breaker system was employed R O Michael won the prize.
Gafoor’s victims were Orlando Michael (19), Maurice Munro (13) Yvonne Murray (32), RO Michael ((260) and Chichester (40). Ruby Cummings broke his streak with a 108 points drubbing. She also upset Chichester with an 80 spread win.
