– competition to be bigger, better with new aspects
The Annual Inter-Organisation Basketball Championships promises to be bigger and better this year with more sponsorship and the addition of features such as marketing from none other than Entertainment moguls, Hits and Jams Television (HJTV).
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Vijay Panday, the owner of VP Sports Update, which will be managing the event for the first time in its history, said that all systems are in place for a day of intense basketball competition among the corporate entities.
Panday informed that Beepat’s Scorpions will not be hosting the event as they did when he was part of the management of the basketball club. The former Head Coach of the Club has severed all ties with Scorpions and is charting a new course in the sport.
Panday and Warren Williams started the Inter-Organisation Basketball Championships years ago and according to the former, this year will be the best year for the event since there has been lots of innovative methods introduced to more or less hype the event.
“It’s definitely on for the 5th (of June) and it’s not a Scorpions thing. The interest is there among the companies that will compete for the title this year,” Panday indicated. Guyana Power & Light are the defending champions in the one-day corporate competition.
The former Head Coach of Scorpions indicated that so far some 24 clubs have shown an interest in competing for the ultimate prize while others have also expressed their willingness to be part of what is shaping up to be the biggest in the event’s history.
“I must say thanks to the Hits and Jams family because they are the ones who really started with me and I cannot forget them. They will be marketing this event that has attracted more corporate support than any of the previous years,” Panday told this newspaper.
He noted that the event will be promoted as a corporate fun day at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall where families of the respective players in each organisation can come out and be entertained. At the venue, according to Panday, Fusion Audio will bring the vibes.
“This is event will be fully branded and the aim is to promote the competing organisations as the legitimate teams. While its fun, a lot of bragging rights will be among the things companies will take seriously in the competition,” Panday continued yesterday.
Among the companies that have supported the event financially this year are Digicel, HJTV, Neal and Massy, Ansa McAl under its Mackeson Brand and Giftland OfficeMax. The contest is likely to include many more entities, including the Media.
