Six contracts totaling approximately $922.6M were on Wednesday presented to contractors for the execution of sea defence works in Regions Two, Three, Four, and Five. Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn charged contractors to carry out works within the contract duration of six months with a defects liability period of one year.
New Hope, Region Four, which is exposed to the Demerara River, will see the construction of steel sheet pile revetment. The contract valued $310M was awarded to Samaroo Investment.
M&B Company was awarded two contracts involving the construction of 550 metres of sea defence. The contractor is expected to erect 200 metres of rip-rap design at Abary, Region Five, to a tune of $152M.
In addition, the company will be executing 350 metres of rip-rap construction at Vergenogen, Region Three. The cost of this project is $63.2M.
Meanwhile, 850 metres of sea defence works in Regions Two and Three would be executed by BK International. The contractor would be constructing 300 metres of rip-rap infrastructure at Amersfort, Wakenaam, Region Three, to a tune of $132.2M.
At Orangestein, Region Three, 350 metres of rip-rap design would be erected to a tune of $136.2M.
In Region Two, at Maria’s Lodge, 200 metres of rip-rap construction would be executed to a tune of $129M.
Minister Benn explained that it is costs Government approximately US$2,500 to US$3,500 to construct one linear metre of sea defence and it is looking to reduce it by at least 40 percent.
He noted that the Ministry is currently reviewing techniques to reduce the cost attached to sea defence construction. However, the cost has actually reduced within recent years, as it was approximately US$4,000 to US$5,000 per linear metre.
