Guyana’s two most outstanding distance athletes Alika Morgan and Jevina Straker have both expressed confidence of doing well at this Sunday’s Independence 5K Road Race which starts at the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport and return to the place of origin.
Kaieteur Sport caught up with the two athletes during a training session yesterday at the National Park where they expressed confidence of doing well at the event.
Morgan said that she will be ready for the race and expects to win it due to her form and the training regimen that she has undergone since competing at the recently concluded President’s / Jefford Track Classic where she performed creditably despite losing the 1500 metres to Janella Jonas.
“Basically I was a bit disappointed that I lost that race since I know that I’m a better athlete that her, but I must confess that I ran the race tactically wrong and paid the price,” Morgan told this newspaper.
She, however, was quick to point out that she returned later and made amends in the other races where she dominated Jonas.
Commenting on her preparation for Sunday’s event, Morgan related that she is feeling in good shape, citing the 5K as her per race and was convinced that she will win the race.
“Even though I’m not taking anyone competitor lightly I’m confident that I will do well and I also want to report that I have no injuries currently and is just rearing to go.”
Meanwhile, Straker in her remarks stated that the workload of her training regimen has been intense and she too is confident of doing well.
“We focused a lot on our speed and I can say that it will be difficult for anyone to beat us.”
She said that the loss to Jonas was not a worry for her since she had just finished running the 400 metres and was not afforded enough time to recuperate.
“I’m confident that I will do well and even win the race,” she remarked.
She indicated that this will be her first 5K race at home and even though she anticipates a tough and challenging race she is positive that she will be there at the end battling for the top spot.
“Fans should expect big things from me and training mate Alika Morgan,” Straker said.
The other top athletes who’re expected to face the starter’s orders are Cleveland Forde, Cleveland Thomas, Doretta Wilson, Dennis Horatio, Chavez Sital, and Ashanti Scott.
The race starts at 16:00 hrs.
At stake are monetary awards ranging from $20,000 to $7,000.
Entrance fee is $200 for adults, while walkers, Masters and juniors are free and the event will be started by Minister of Culture, Youth & Sport Dr. Frank Anthony.
