Lennox ‘Pretty Boy’ Allen and Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry touched down at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport around 10:00hrs yesterday and had hardly rested before dispatching stern missives to Kwesi ‘Lightening Struck Assassin’ Jones and Dexter Marques to come dressed in pajamas as they will go to bed early.
The two overseas based Guyanese are scheduled to square off against their respective opponents in ‘The Rampage,’ a 46 rounds boxing card slated for this Saturday May 28th at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue.
Both boxers opted for light sessions at the two Albouystown based gyms; Alleyne at the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) and Dharry at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis Boxing Gym (ALBG). The ‘Coolie Bully’ engaged in several stiff rounds on the pads before finishing up with a few rounds shadow boxing and light calisthenics while, as if on cue, Allen emulated his overseas based counterpart.
Allen admitted that he knew about Jones except the little that he had heard from his gym mates. “I have absolutely no regards for Jones; this fight is merely a formality to bolster my career,” pronounced Alleyne who is currently on the verge of a lucrative rating among the top ten fighters in the world. Indeed, the overseas based pugilist appeared to be in the pink of condition and from all appearances is set to back his chat.
While Dharry dispatched his missive to Marques the latter fighter was rounding off his sessions at the FYF. Earlier in the week he had closed off sparring sessions with ten hectic rounds between former Fecarbox jnr/lightweight champion, Joseph Murray and top amateur pugilist, Delon Allicock. Marques scoffed at Dharry’s remarks and reversed the situation saying that he plans to close up shop before the sixth round. Commenting on Dharry’s last fight against Orland ‘Pocket Rocket’ Rogers which the ‘Coolie Bully’ won by stoppage, Marques said, “So what, I knocked out Rogers in the eleventh round!” The former bantamweight champion further said that his eyes are riveted on the international stage and he cannot afford to lose to Dharry since such an eventuality would hinder his progress onto the international stage. “And I have no intention of letting that happen,” declared Marques.
Local light/heavyweight champion, Mitchell Rogers was also at the FYF and has promised to deal with his nemesis, Kurt Bess. The muscular Rogers had stopped Bess in their first meeting but the lanky Bess had turned in a determined effort in the return encounter and decked Rogers on the way to a unanimous verdict. However, the fight was a non title affair and Rogers, despite being on the losing end, went away with his title. This time around that accolade is on the line and Rogers intimated that he is not prepared to give it up. “This is the first time that I have trained so diligently,” explained Rogers. He said that he intends to knockout Bess and ‘done this eye pass once and for all.’
The other fights are Edmond DeClou up against Winston Pompey in a 6 rounds light/middleweight clash while debutant, Ray Sandiford and Cecil Smith face off in the night’s opener in a 4 rounds lightweight contest.
Admission to the event is $3,000 for a ringside seat while the price for the stand remains at $1,500.
There will be no live broadcasting of this card but a pre-recorded showing will be done later on. The fighters convene for the weigh-in ceremony at the Regency Hotel, Hadfield St, Georgetown at 19:30hrs tonight.
