A fair size crowd which included several parents watched as Ryan Hackett netted three goals to spearhead Pele to a 5-nil win against Fruta Conquerors in yesterday’s final of the inaugural Sunburst Camptown Football Club Under-12 six-team competition.
In blazing sunshine at the Campton ground in Campbellville, Hackett opened the scoring in the 3rd minute before adding two more in the second half for his hat-trick, while the other goals came off the boots of Phillipe Gomes and Skipper Leon Richardson.
Played on a round-robin format on Saturday last, Camptown, Pele ‘A’, Grass Roots Academy and Fruta Conquerors qualified for yesterday’s semifinals and Conquerors beat Grass Roots 2-1 on penalties, while Hackett, who scored the most goals in the competition, scored twice in Pele’s 3-nil win as they progressed to the final.
The competition was the brainchild of former National Footballer and Campton’s division one Captain Orlando Gilgeous, who described the tournament as a success and expressed pleasure with the amount of talent on show among the pre-teen ball weavers.
After Hackett’s first goal Richardson, the nephew of National player Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson scored just before half time to keep Pele in front.
The Conquerors strikers were never allowed any freedom as they tried unsuccessfully to penetrate the Pele defence and a minute into the second half Hackett made it 3-nil before he found the back of the net again nine minutes later.
The stocky Brazilian, Gomes, compounded Conquerors’ misery four minutes before the final whistle to spark celebrations among their fans.
Camptown FC’s President Dennis Paul presented the championship trophy to Pele’s Skipper Richardson while Conquerors collected the runner-up trophy.
Paul thanked DeSinco’s Trading, the Kashif and Shanghai Organization, Guinness Bar, Conscious Minds Promotions, Rakesh Shop on Sheriff Street and the GFF for their contribution in making the competition possible and disclosed that plans for next year’s competition will commence shortly.
