Dear Editor,
In my letter to the press comparing the 2006-2010 with that of the 2011-2015 salary agreement signed between the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU) and the Ministry of Education, I mentioned a $5 million a year subvention that was given to GTU in 2006.
Some teachers have called me to say that the subvention was not included as part of the agreement and that my comparison might be wrong.
They were right to point that out since it was not written as a part of the 2006 agreement.
This addition to the 2006 agreement was made public by Mr. Colwyn King then President of the GTU (SN “Government has agreed to give teachers’ union a $5M subvention” 2006-11-22). According to Mr. King, the money was supposed to cushion the effects of non-members of the union who would have benefited from the 2006 salary agreement and used for education and training.
If during the life of the 2011-2015 salary agreement the union will continue to receive this subvention, it is neither in the agreement nor has anything been said publicly so I cannot tell. But any member who might wish to find out how the $25 million given to GTU as part the 2006 agreement was spent or to look at any other document, they simply have to write to the General Secretary of the Union requesting permission (Rule 7(iii) GTU constitution).
