Four more Assistant Commissioners but no deputies

The Police Service Commission has approved promotions for four more Assistant Commissioners, but quite significantly none for the post of Deputy Commissioner.
The absence of a Deputy Commissioner would be noteworthy as the current Commissioner of Police, 57-year-old Henry Greene, has been troubled with medical issues and in-and-out of hospital within recent times.
Assistant Commissioner Leroy Brumell, a former Commander of “C” Division, East Coast Demerara, is currently fulfilling Greene’s duties.
The four new Assistant Commissioners approved are Senior Superintendent Deryck Grosvenor of the Special Branch; Senior Superintendent Claire Jarvis – Staff Officer of the Personnel Department; Senior Superintendent Dereck Josiah – Second in Command of “A” Division, and W/Senior Superintendent Carol Lewis-Primo – Deputy Head of Immigration.
With those four promotions, the force now has 11 Assistant Commissioners, with the others being Leroy Brumell, Seelall Persaud, Balram Persaud, Steve Merai, George Vyphuis, David Ramnarine and Gavin Primo.
Special Branch has been without a Deputy Commissioner for a number of years since the retirement of Edward Wills.
Greene, in 2004, had headed the list of promotions. He was among five Deputy Commissioners announced at the time. The others were Assistant Commissioner Sydney Bunbury, DSM; Assistant Commissioner Edward Wills, DSM; Assistant Commissioner Leon Trim, DSM; and Assistant Commissioner Mohamed Jameer, DSM – Jameer had been promoted to the rank of Supernumerary Deputy Commissioner.
The President has the powers to appoint the Commissioner of Police while the Police Service Commission is charged with that of the Deputy Commissioner(s).
