A thirteen-man team will represent the University of Guyana (UG) at the 5th Annual Inter-Collegiate 20/20 cricket competition scheduled from May 27 to June 3, 2011 at the University of the West Indies, Cavehill Campus, Barbados.
The team’s combined talent captured bronze for the University of Guyana at last year’s competition in Barbados. This year they will compete against defending champions Barbados Community College and five other tertiary level and Barbados-based club teams.
The UG team chosen for this year’s competition includes top performing batsmen Melroy Stephenson and Rudolph Mc Donald, who were a part of the squad selected last year. The remainder line-up includes a number of other veterans to this tournament and promising new comers namely, opening batters Dwayne Dodson and Kumar Bridgelall, middle order batsmen Omesh Danram, Rinhold Cameron and Garfield Douglas, wicket keeper Damien DeAbreu, all-rounders Kenroy Joseph and Shane Rekheram, spinner Dennis Heywood and fast bowlers Stephon Josiah and Steve Rekheram.
Over the years, the inter-collegiate competition has become the launching pad for selection of exceptional UG cricketers to play on the Combined Colleges & Campuses cricket team- a first-class cricket team that plays in the West Indies domestic competitions.
Coaching the squad is former West Indies fast bowler Colin Stuart. Team selection were guided by strict criteria such as player performance, fitness level, availability to play, registration status, discipline and dedication to the UG team.
The team will play their first match on May 28 against UWI, St. Augustine Campus.
The University of Guyana extends best wishes to the team for creditable performance in all of their matches.
