The Table Tennis hype continues in the Ancient County, this time with the playing off of the top 16 players Independence competition in the Ancient County. The competition which is organized by the Steering Committee of the Berbice Table Tennis Association is slated for this today in the auditorium of the University of Guyana Berbice Campus commencing at 09:00hrs.
The organizers in collaboration with the Guyana Table Tennis Association have invited the nine most consistent senior players and the top seven junior players to make up the 16 who will match serves in the top of the table competition in battle for championship honours.
Players such as Berbice open champion “one hand wonder “Gibran Safaraz Hussein, Floyd Conway, Desiree Lancaster, Richard Bacchus, Omraj Singh, Brentnol Richards, Levi Nedd, Jermaine Charles, Anthony Bishop, makes up the seniors, while Sherwin Sahadeo, Bryton Murray, Denison Mentore, Joshua Lalbachan, Ian Bagot, Ryan Anderson and Luen David are the juniors trying to upstage the seniors.
Trophies and other incentives including cash donated by Republic Bank New Amsterdam Branch and other business entities in Berbice will be available to the top four finishers in the tournament and other outstanding participants, while a surprise presentation will also be made on the day.
Minister of Sports, Dr Frank Anthony and President of the GTTA Commissioner of Police Henry Green DSM have given their blessing to the tournament.
The Berbice Association is leading the way in the GTTA expansion drive; this is the third tournament that the Association will be holding since the game was re-launched in the Ancient County in February with a splendid one day Berbice open tournament, followed by a Berbice schools tournament. A day of keen competition is anticipated as the juniors move up a few notches to slug it out with their senior counterparts for championship honours.
General Secretary of The GTTA Godfrey Munroe and National coach Linden Johnson are expected to be in attendance to help coordinate the event.
Meanwhile, the association will use the opportunity to present the prizes to the winners of the recently held Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports sponsored Berbice schools Table Tennis Tournament 2011, which was held during the month of April at the Berbice High School.
The results were as follows. 21 years and under open; 1st Ian Bagot, 2nd Ryan Anderson, 3rd Luen David
18 years and under boys the three top finishers were; 1st Bryton Murray, 2nd Denison Mentore, 3rd Joshua Lalbachan- All of New Amsterdam Multilateral.
Boys 15 years and under saw 1st Joshua Lalbachan, 2nd Bryton Murray, 3rd Julian Haniff Girls 15 years and under winners were 1st Anita Alleyne, 2nd Joylyn Conway and 3rd Christine Surujpaul
Boys 13 years and under was won by Jordan Conway with Joshua Butts and Shaquan Spencer finishing in the top three.
In the U10 category all the participants were from The St. Therese Primary school and the results were Boys 10 years and under – 1st Trevon Hintzen, 2nd Troy Munroe 3rd Gabrion Ramsarran
Girls 10 years and under top placers were 1st Emily Ramsuchit and second Simanda De Cunha
The GTTA will also be donating a set of balls, racquets and other training equipment to the Berbice association.
Representatives from the Ministries of Culture, Youth and Sports and Education along with the Regional administration are expected to be in attendance. Director of The University of Guyana Berbice Campus, Professor D. Samad will be in attendance.
