The suspect who was arrested in connection with the murder of 40-year-old Verone Patoir has been released.
According to Crime Chief of ‘B’ Division, Courtney Ramsey, the man, Suresh Rampersaud, a hire car driver in New Amsterdam, was released on a “substantial amount” of station bail, yesterday from the Central Police Station.
He told Kaieteur News that the police will be continuing their investigations while awaiting advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Ramsey stated that the police needs the cooperation of residents of the area in Stanleytown. He said that they need to come forward to the police and say who the persons were that usually visited Patoir in her home.
Patoir, a mother of three teenaged girls, was found in a pool of blood at her Lot 42 Mud Lot Stanleytown, New Amsterdam home just after 15:00 hours last Friday. Patoir was said to have been in a very abusive and rocky relationship with a man who was reported to have been visiting the home frequently.
The Crime Chief said that a rolling pin (belna) and knife were recovered from the bloody scene. The rolling pin is thought to have been used to bludgeon Patoir in the face while the knife was used to slit her throat.
She died from profuse bleeding and mental shock, as a post- mortem by Government pathologist, Dr Vivekanand Brijmohan revealed on Monday.
Patoir was discovered by her 12-year-old daughter, Oshanna Hughes, upon her return home from school on Friday. Hughes then alerted her aunt, Rozina Patoir, who then arrived at the scene.
Rozina told Kaieteur News that she had tried to coerce her sister to get out of the abusive relationship but that advice was not heeded. Rampersaud, who was arrested on Friday shortly after the discovery, usually shuttled the children to and from school every day.
It is widely believed by the woman’s family that Patoir was murdered out of rage because it was discovered by her lover that she was making plans to acquire passports for herself and the children.
Her reputed husband, who lives overseas, was said to be making plans to have her and the children migrate overseas.
Patoir was buried at her home village of Sand Hills, up the Berbice River, on Wednesday.
