Police are focusing on a man whom they consider to be their prime suspect in the clubbing to death of Dr. Ramsundar Doobay’s wife, Sharanie Doobay.
But they are still baffled as to what the motive could be, and how the killer, who might have had bloodstained clothing, could have left the scene without being observed.
Detectives returned to the crime scene yesterday but reportedly found no new leads. A source said that no one was in custody at present.
Police officials confirmed that they had questioned a close relative of the slain woman, but that he has been released.
Investigators are working on the theory that the 58-year-old woman was murdered in a fit of rage by someone she knew well. Kaieteur News was told that investigators are focusing on a particular individual.
Describing it as a “puzzling crime”, one official said that investigators are baffled by the fact that there was no visible sign of forced entry and that the killer (s) apparently did not make off with anything of value.
Kaieteur News was told that police found millions in cash in the slain woman’s home. Commander of ‘A’ Division, Assistant Police Commissioner George Vyphuis confirmed yesterday that money, as well as Dr. Doobay’s licensed firearm, were found at the scene.
“So far, based on police ranks on the ground, there was no sign of breakage, but we have to question the doctor to see if anything was missing,” the Commander said.
At the time that Kaieteur News spoke with him, Commander Vyphuis said that he was still to be briefed by his ranks about whether anyone had been detained.
Another thing that appears to be puzzling detectives is the fact that Mrs. Doobay’s killer apparently entered the house and left the scene without being observed. Police reportedly found no signs in the house to show that anyone washed themselves of blood before leaving.
Kaieteur News was told by a resident that there is no security guard close to Doobay’s house during the day.
“The house next to them (the Doobays) has a security but he works only in the night and likewise for the house on the other side.”
Dr. Doobay’s relatives yesterday declined to divulge any information to the media.
“He was a very private man. He loved his wife and he would not want us to give any information or photographs of his wife, so we have to respect his wishes,”
The body of 58-year-old Sharanie Doobay was lying in a pool of blood near the kitchen of the two-storey Echilibar Villas, Campbellville home on Tuesday afternoon.
She had been struck at least four times in the head with a blunt instrument. Police sources said that one of the wounds was to the back of the head, another at the side, and two at the top of the skull.
