They say that when it rains it pours and the organizers of ‘The Rampage,’ the tab given to the 46 rounds boxing extravaganza organized by the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), are enjoying a massive downpour following the corporate intervention of the Guyana Oil Company (Guyoil) yesterday morning.
Marketing Supervisor of that organization, Cheryl James performed the honours of handing over a cheque valued $150,000 to GBBC president Peter Abdool at the entity’s Waterloo Street based head office. This is a part of the ongoing support rendered by the oil magnates ever since the ProAm boxing cards commenced in February 2010. In handing over the cheque, Ms James described the gesture as a pleasure and a corporate responsibility.
“We at Guyoil/Castrol are very pleased to be associated with this event since we believe it would contribute to the continued development of the fistic sport,” exhorted Ms James. “It is our fervent hope that this contribution be of great value.”
Mr. Abdool graciously accepted the gift while extending deep gratitude to the Guyoil executive. He also extended appreciation to Company Secretary Abdool Kadir, Castrol Brand Manager Leonard Khan, and Guyoil’s Chairman Dr. Bud Mangal who have all demonstrated unwavering support for the ProAm card as well as other boxing initiatives over the years. “Their contribution is integral to the development of boxing, both at the amateur and professional level,” Abdool concluded.
‘The Rampage’ is not a ProAm card but a positive spinoff of the aforementioned event, but Castrol/Guyoil has joined forces with the organizers ever since the inauguration of the ProAm cards.
This act of chivalry is therefore a continuation of the support rendered to GBBC officials in their promotion of the fistic sport.
The card this Saturday promises to be a humdinger and showcases the skills of the best local talent.
The three title fights pit the skills of Kurt Bess against Mitchell Rogers for the local heavyweight title, Kwesi ‘Lightening Struck Assassin’ Jones will next attempt to destroy Lennox ‘Pretty Boy’ Allen for the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super middleweight title, while Dexter Marques will be out to prove he is better than USA based bantamweight pugilist, Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry. The winner carts off the bantamweight version of the CABOFE title.
In the other bouts of the night Edmond DeClou tackles Winston Pompey in a grudge match and Ray Sandiford starts his professional career in a bout against the more experienced Cecil Smith over four rounds.
As the clock winds down the days into hours, into minutes and then seconds the boxers are winding down preparations.
The action will take place at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from 20:00hrs and admission to the venue is $1,500 (stands) and $3,000 (ringside).
Apart from Guyoil, the event has received monetary support from Digicel and Courts (Guyana) Inc.
