While the nation celebrates the 45th Independence Day in reverence, contemplating the strides made by this country during those years, top scrabble players would be vying for honours when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) stages the annual Independence Open competition, this Thursday at the Malteenoes Sports Club Pavilion.
Whereas before, choosing a winner was easy, the situation has developed into keen rivalry as the budding players have successfully made the transition from tenderfoots to strong forces to be reckoned with. The evidence was there in the recently staged Indian Arrival Day Open when Michael
Benjamin defeated top seeds, James Krakowsky and Ruby Cummings before losing to Moen Gafoor by a last gasp effort on the part of that player that secured a narrow victory.
Added to that, one must always be wary of Moen Gafoor, Orlando Michael, Colin Chichester and Leon Belony. Further, on the distaff side there is the dangerous Abigail McDonald, who after a prolonged hiatus returned to capture the spoils in the Indian Arrival Day competition. Then there are Grace Hercules and Yvonne Murray who have represented the females with distinction and obviously would nurture ambitions of ascending the podium. Naturally, with such fierce competition bolstered by competitive spirit a keen contest is envisaged.
Added to those prizes for the three top finishers will also be other incentives including the highest single play, the player that forms the most bingos and the best junior player. The last prize will be donated by Julian Skeete of Wakefield’s Photo/Video Works.
