Cougars Football Club played unbeaten to take top honours when the first ever Digicel sponsored, Digicel Cup Football competition organized by the Hearts Of Oak Masters Football Club (HOMFC) was played off in Berbice.
Seven teams were invited to the two night competition which was played under floodlights on Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 May at the Scot Church Ground at Princess Elizabeth Road New Amsterdam. Football starved Berbicians turned out in their numbers to witness six of the seven teams invited, in action in the competition which was played on a knock out basis.
Cougars, who have been one of the top teams in the county for sometime, upped their game at the right time as they brushed aside all their opponents to take top honours and walked away with the Digicel Trophy and the $75,000 winner’s money.
In the final Cougars came up against host Hearts of Oak Masters and roared to a 4-1 victory with Winston Benjamin hitting in a double, while there were one each for Stephan De Florimonte and Kelvin Joseph. The score line was 1-0 at half time. Former national Sherwin Forde responded for the Maters.
In earlier play, Pistons Football Club got the better of Corriverton Links 2-0 with Dion Sancho netting home the double. Game two saw Cougars winning by a 2-0 margin with Winston Benjamin and Kelvin Joseph being the marksmen. New Amsterdam United (NAU) then got a walk over from Rose hall Town.
In semifinal play HOMFC whipped Pistons FC 3-0 with Vivian Bowling, Horace Roach and Terrence Lewis being the marksmen. In the second semifinal Cougars stunned NAU 3-0 with the prolific Winston Benjamin once again on target. He got support from Franken Mercurius and Stephen DeFlorimonte.
In third place play off NAU took revenge on Pistons with a 4-0 drubbing. On target for the winners were Adrian Adams 2, Leonardo Adams 1 and a defence error.
At the end of the second night’s proceedings the winners and outstanding individual players were presented with their winnings by representatives of the Sponsor Digicel. Apart from Cougars, HOHFC received $50,000 and a trophy. NAU collected the third place trophy and $30,000, while fourth place Pistons walked away with a trophy and $20,000.
In the individual category Cougars made a clean sweep of the prizes available with Stephen DeFlorimonte copping two awards for being the MVP on show and scoring the best goal during the tournament. Winston Benjamin got his accolade for scoring the Most Goals (4) while Goalkeeper Ryan Kellowan got the award for being the Best Goalkeeper on show. They all received trophies.
The organizers have pledged to continue supporting the tournament. The coordinators were former national Player Neil “Grizzly” Humphrey and former Berbice player Nigel “Busit” Felix.
