All roads this evening leads to the Guyana national Stadium, Providence for what is anticipated to be two exciting semifinal games in the Caribbean Football Union Club Champions Cup.
It is the biggest club tournament ever to be hosted on local shores featuring the top four club sides in the Caribbean.
Home team Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United will be coming up against the Defending Champions Puerto Rico Islanders in this evening’s feature game, the curtain raiser of equal importance features top Trinidad & Tobago side Defence Force and Haiti’s Tempete FC, the latter team was expected to arrive in Guyana last evening after encountering some flight challenges.
At a brief press conference yesterday afternoon at the Water Chris Hotel, Quamina Street, President of Alpha United Odinga Lumumba expressed gratitude to FIFA, CONCACAF, CFU and the GFF for their support in making the final four playoffs a reality for Guyana with his club as host.
CFU Representative Jason Sylvester in brief remarks extended good luck to all the teams noting that it was a privilege for the CFU to host the semifinals, third place and final of its premier tournament in Guyana. “We are looking forward to seeing some good and competitive matches here on Wednesday and Friday.”
Head Coach of Puerto Rico Islanders Colin Clarke complimented the host for the high level of hospitality that has been extended to them ever since arriving. He declared that the level of the tournament has been up the rise over the years and they are honoured and lucky to be involved.
“It’s becoming very important within the Region and that’s great. It’s nice to come to different countries and we can see how the game is growing within the Region. Good luck to all the teams and it’s a great tournament to be in, let’s hope for some good soccer and let’s enjoy ourselves.”
Clarke, when questioned on what fans can expect from the defending champions, said that it is never at all easy to compete away from home especially given the rigors of travelling.
“We are proud to be champions, playing in Guyana this year is something different, something new for us but we expect hard games. For anybody to have gotten this far they have had to come through some tough schedules of travelling and playing.
And like I said, the game has improved every year in this region and it’s not easy to get this far. So we are expecting a hard game tomorrow {today} and we will expect a hard game on Friday night as well.”
In his remarks Dover promised that as a club, Alpha will be playing an entertaining brand of football for the fans and is also promising that his club will qualify in the top three to advance to the CONCACAF Club Championships.
Defence Force Head Coach Ross Russell is urging the fans to come out in their numbers to witness top class football with the best of the Caribbean on show.
“I am urging you to come out and support the CFU league because it’s going to be exciting. We intend to enliven the games, win, lose or draw so we are urging the people to come out and support the Caribbean teams as they aspire to move forward to the CONCACAF level.”
Kick off time this evening is 18:00hrs between Tempete FC and Defence Force with the main event between hosts Alpha United and Puerto Rico Islanders.
The winners of this evenings matches as well as the team to win the third place game on Friday will advance to the CONCACAF Club Championships. Tonight’s winners will face off in the final for the CFU Club Champions Cup trophy and bragging rights as the Caribbean’s best.
