– Police dethrone National Park United
World class Guyanese middle distance star Aliann Pompey, who headlined the second edition of the President’s / Jefford Track Classic produced a scorching run down the homestretch to beat her nearest rival by at least five metres in the Women’s 200 metres final on Sunday, at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground.
Watched by a huge crowd that included representatives of the two major sponsors Digicel’s CEO Gregory Dean, Business Development and Sponsorship Manager Gavin Hope, Ansa McAl Anjeta Hinds, Wartsila’s Arron Fraser, Parliamentary Secretary attached to the Ministry of Culture, Youth & Sport Steve Ninvalle, senior officials from the Linden Township and overseas-based nationals, Pompey, a former gold and silver medallist at the Commonwealth Games showed her class in eclipsing a strong field much to the delight of the thousands of fans that came out to support what could now be safely described as the biggest showcase in track and field.
The much loved US-based Pompey, who is easily the most recognised Guyanese athlete, speaking with the media shortly after the race said that she enjoyed her stay in Guyana and is hoping to return next year along with some other athletes from the USA for the Classic.
Meanwhile, the Meet saw new champions being crowned with Police Sports Club, that finished on a total of 355 points, winning the overall title and they were followed by the Guyana Defence Force on 322, inaugural champions National Park United with 161, Upper Demerara Schools on 141 and Overseas in the cellar with 10.
The champion athletes were distance runner Cleveland Forde of the GDF, who grabbed two first places in the 5,000 and 1500 metres races and finished third in the 800 metres, while field athlete Natasha Alder of Police dominated with wins in the Long Jump, Triple Jump and Javelin events.
Other outstanding performances came from GDF’s Rupert Perry, who dominated the sprints, capturing both the 100 and 200 metres, National Park’s Alika Morgan, who though looked well below her best won the 3000 metres and placed second in the 1500 and 800 metres events.
Neisa Allen recorded two second places in the 400 and 200 metres, while Latisha Myles scored an upset beating Tiffany Carto and Leota Babb to the line in the 100 metres and returned later in the day to place second in the women’s Long Jump.
Shannah Thornhill captured the women’s 400 metres; Jevina Straker did likewise in the 800 metres, while Jenella Jonas sprung a surprise when she came home ahead of Morgan and Adama Roberts in the 1500 metres.
