Dear Editor,
I have noticed that Banks DIH Ltd. made great profits for the first half of 2011 and Mr. Clifford Reis has to be congratulated for his great stewardship of that company. Shareholders have to be happy; employees have to fell more secure in their respective jobs and the coffers of the government have to be more filled by the taxes brought in.
Banks Ltd., which Mr. Peter D’Aguiar, a hero of business enterprise in Guyana, started decades ago, has become a bulwark of free enterprise in Guyana and is an example of what could be if the Guyanese economy can become unfettered by government intervention and a significant decrease in corporate taxation, so that expansion of companies like Banks, Ltd. can occur; more jobs, more revenue to the Treasury and most of all, new start up companies would be the outcome, to the benefit of all Guyanese.
Mr. Editor, when one looks at what all our political parties have done in the last 45 years since independence, in terms of placing Ministers into the Finance Ministry or the Trade and Industry Ministry, one can see that our politicians have been poorly advised; it should have been obvious that a business leader like Mr. Clifford Reis would have been perfect for such important positions in government, even if the “extra mile” in terms of compensation, privilege and power has to be contemplated in securing the talents of such a person by any government in power.
A business leader of Mr. Reis’s calibre, as a powerful Minister in our government can bring huge dividends to our nation if given a free hand, the necessary budget and confidence by the President of our Republic. Imagine what could be with such a person in charge of Trade and Industry or Finance; confidence, connections and the sense of new directions would invigorate local and foreign investors, lending institutions and international donors to look at Guyana with optimism and a sense of security in their involvement in our country.
It is time that the best brains, regardless of race, religion or class origin, take the helm of our country’s development in creating a new and strong free enterprise system.
I take my hat off to Clifford Reis and Banks, Ltd and wish them continued success; their success is our success and their investments and expansion are good for all of our citizens and our nation.
Mr. Reis in not only an outstanding citizen of our country but an inspiring leader to all the young enterprising citizens who should emulate his example to make Guyana a country where the private sector would really become the true engine of growth and development.
