A cheque valued at one million dollars exchanged hands yesterday morning when Digicel acquiesced to support ‘The Rampage’, 46 rounds boxing card slated for this Saturday May 28 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue.
Acting on behalf of the telephone company, Public Relations Manager, Shonette Moore and Senior Marketing executive, Tamara Clarke, handed over the gift to President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control, Peter Abdool in the boardroom of Abdool and Abdools Insurance Brokers, Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown.
The forum was also graced by the presence of media representatives, local cruiserweight king, Kwesi Jones, who opposes overseas based, Lennox Allen for the Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super/middleweight crown and former bantamweight champion Dexter Marques who fights Elton Dharry for the Bantamweight version of the CABOFE title.
“Digicel continues to be a staunch corporate citizen and we are indeed appreciative of the support rendered to boxing over the years,” exhorted Mr. Abdool.
He reminded the gathering that Digicel had committed to a one year sponsorship deal towards the sustenance of the sport. The initial focus was the ProAm boxing card and has been extended to the upcoming programme.
Mr. Abdool emphasized the impending card was not the regular ProAm affair but as a result of the respective principals’ advancement after involvement in the aforementioned programme. He subsequently expressed deep gratitude to Digicel for their continued support.
“This card is a direct spin-off of the of Fight Night affair and if Digicel had decline to render support there would not have been fight night,” explained Mr. Abdool in drawing a nexus to both activities. He further singled out the chivalry extended by CEO of Digicel, Gregory Dean saying that he has taken a personal; interest in the card and by extension the development of the local pugilists.
Meanwhile, Ms Moore reminded of her company’s commitment to a wide cross section of disciplines including football, squash, and cricket among others. “Digicel views sports as a means of development for young people and a sure way of reciprocating the support rendered by our many customers,” she exhorted. “We will continue to render such support in keeping with our developmental policy,” she concluded.
The other fights on the card are Kurt Bess against Mitchell Rogers for the latter fighter’s heavyweight crown and Edmond DeClou up against Winston Pompey in a 6 rounds light/middleweight clash. Debutant, Ray Sandiford and Cecil Smith face off in the night’s opener in a 4 rounds lightweight contest.
Admission to the event is $3,000 for a ringside seat, while the price for the stand remains at $1,500. There will be no live broadcasting of this card but a pre-recorded showing will be done later on.
The fighters convene for the weigh-in ceremony at the Regency Hotel, Hadfield St, Georgetown at 19:30hrs on Friday.
