Dear Editor,
The findings of an opinion survey being conducted by NACTA reveal that some voters are disappointed in the performance of the Peoples Partnership (PP) government, as it completes its first year in office with many respondents being cynical in the way the government has conducted business of late.
Most respondents in the poll say there has not been much change in the way business is conducted since they voted out the PNM. In the eyes of voters, the government has lost credibility – blamed on a series of missteps, unforced errors, awarding of contracts, Ministers speaking out of turn, etc.
But the good news for the government is supporters continue to display goodwill for Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar and are confident she will take measures to change the way government does business. Voters also single out Ministers, Jack Warner, Roodal Moonilal, Glenn Ramadharsingh, and Vasant Bharath for kudos.
Many respondents complain that there has not been much real change since the Peoples Partnership took office a year ago and that many things are being done the same way as under the former PNM administration. Some are not pleased with the pace of delivery of promises made during the election campaign. Some voters express regret they voted for the PP coalition, but are not pleased with the PNM alternative.
The qualitative findings of the ongoing poll are obtained from interviews conducted with several hundred adults over the last week. The quantitative data will be released in a subsequent report.
According to the findings, majorities back Kamla’s handling of the Mary King affair and ordering inquiries into CAL and the NP contracts resulting in her maintaining her popularity. The Opposition Leader, Dr. Keith Rowley, is also holding on to his popularity getting praises for making the government accountable.
Voters are also pleased with the way Ministers Roodal Moonilal and Vasant Bharath resolved the farmer’s issue. Vasant is praised for his competence and his sincere attempt to address agricultural problems. He
is extremely popular among farmers. Moonilal also gets kudos for his handling of parliamentary affairs as Leader of Government Business and for staying focused in trying to provide housing even if it means making unpopular decisions. This has earned him cross racial appeal.
Minister Jack Warner continues to lead his cabinet colleagues in performance and effectiveness in getting things done. Jack and Moonilal are winning kudos among PP supporters for standing up to the PNM and defending the PM and the government. Voters also credit Moonilal and Jack for taking lead roles in helping the PM to try to deliver on the partnership’s manifesto promises.
Minister Glenn Ramadharsingh is praised for serving the people and helping the needy.
The nation is not pleased with the handling of health, crime, the economy, etc., with most voters saying there has not been much difference in the way the former PNM and the PP have combated crime. Surprisingly, a lot of voters see corruption as the most important issue facing the PP administration. And a lot of voters say they don’t have much confidence in the future of T&T.
The government has lost popular support since the election of May 2010 with apathy rising. Support for the COP, in particular, has dissipated in the critical east west corridor. However, voters still prefer the PP over the PNM which is not viewed as a viable alternative.
For leadership of COP, incumbent Winston Dookeran is preferred over challenger Anil Roberts. Some voters credit Dookeran for making tough unpopular economic decisions. Other findings and quantitative data will be released in a subsequent report.
