Dear Editor,
Peoples National Congress Reform (PNCR) again demonstrated that it is all about putting Guyana first. Therefore, when the PNCR announced at its General Council Meeting, on May 21, 2011, that it would contest the 2011 elections with a coalition of three other political parties I celebrated with all right thinking Guyanese, who were eagerly awaiting this positive announcement.
Despite of its vastness, the PNCR in its quest to ensure a government of national unity recognise that it must take those steps, necessary to achieve this unselfish objective. At the General Council Meeting, the leadership of the PNCR was able to convince its members, and reemphasise the value, of the need for a broad alliance to restore good governance to Guyana.
As Guyanese we all must celebrate this bold initiative and congratulate all the parties involved in this process to make Guyana a truly democratic state where the rule of law is upheld. So the PNCR, the Working Peoples Alliance (WPA), Guyana Action Party (GAP), and the National Front Alliance (NFA) must all be commended for demonstrating a commitment to put the interest of the people of Guyana first.
I believe that this kind of unselfish and mature politics augurs well for the political future of a country marred by petty politics. The current state of Guyana would require all of us who preach “interest of the country” to demonstrate through our action that we are not only about words, as the people who matter will judge us harshly.
The time has come for us to recognise that our collective actions are needed to rescue Guyana from the belly of the modern day dictators who have done every inconceivable wrong to this beautiful country. They have reduced the Office of the President to a mere corruption hot bed, rendered the sugar industry a patient on permanent life support, the life of every Guyanese in perpetual fear; the bauxite workers a people not fit for work; torture a justified interrogation technique; VAT a rope around every citizen’s neck; the school system painfully broken; the national treasury the jack pot of the executive; free speech a right restricted to the ruling elite; trade unionism irrelevant; criminal enterprise the new and thriving business venture; national borders most efficient for drug trafficking; a parliament that responds to the demands of the PPP/C cabal and so much more.
It is time for those who are serious about protecting the future of this country to take collective action to protect the future of the country. There is no time for political grandstanding; boyish politics or strong arms tactics; time for positive action. Party symbol cannot be paramount to national interest, individual quest to be president cannot take precedent over the people’s interest. Time for mature politics!
I urge every Guyanese to get in line and check and recheck to ensure that your name is on the list to vote, you have a few more weeks left, get in line to make real change.
